Hmong Man
With flintlock rifle
Northern Laos

Caption::I traveled alone by motorcycle north from the former royal capitol of Luang Phrabang some 45 kilometers up the Mekong River and then up into the mountains to a Hmong village named Ban Long Lan. Not used to seeing Europeans, many villagers fled into their huts upon seeing me. Many of the Hmong fought the Communists Pathet Lao with the support of covert U.S. forces during the Vietnam War. This young man was returning from a hunting trip and was giddy with excitement upon meeting me. He carries an old muzzle-loading flintlock rife. Note the hat he is wearing!
