Avalanche Lilly
Mount Rainier
National Park, WA

Description:Spring comes in late July on the alpine slopes of Mt. Rainier. Near here was recorded the world’s largest winter snowfall of 102 feet in 1971. Avalanche lilies (Erythronium monanum) are so named for the fact that they often spring-up at the edges of snow banks, even thrusting up through one or two inches of melting snow.
