| Description: | The Latin name for Polar Bear is Ursus Maritimus which means “sea” or “ocean bear” and this thousand-pound male is in his natural element – the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean. Constantly on the move hunting for seals, polar bears will eat anything (or anyone) they encounter.
90% percent of polar bear pictures you see are taken near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada on the banks of the Hudson Bay on (snow-covered) land, where the bears wait for the sea to freeze. Churchill bears are the southernmost polar bears at about 58 degrees north latitude (the same as Juneau, Alaska). This photo was taken where most polar bears spend their lives – away from land on pack ice in the high arctic. It was taken near the Spitzbergen archipelago at 80 degrees north latitude, just 700 miles from the North Pole. |
