Musical family, Jodhpur, India

Description:Jodhpur is one of India’s most interesting cities. In its center is the massive 15th century Rajput Meherangath Fort, home to the local Maharaja. Nearby I visited the white marble Jaswant Thanda Memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Passing through the gardens I encountered this local family resting in a shady stairway. The mother and oldest daughter danced while the father played a homemade fiddle called a sarangi. The dark eyeliner around the children’s eyes (called kohl) serves to ward off the evil eye from hostile witches.
