Pacaya Volcano lava fountain at night, Guatemala
| Description: | After hiring a local 10-year-old boy as a guide, I climbed the 8,373’ active volcano Pacaya in central Guatemala. I wanted to photograph the eruptions at night. Reaching the crater rim, I peered down into the deep crater and watched a 300-foot tall lava fountain erupting from the floor of the crater. This one-minute exposure captured the continuously spewing lava in the center of the volcano's summit crater. Returning down the mountain in the dark, I was grateful the boy knew the best way down through the maze of stunted forests that covered the lower slopes. |
