Chimborazo and sheep, Ecuador
| Description: | Once thought to be the highest mountain in the world, 20,702’ Chimborazo still is, in a sense. Being the highest mountain near the equator (120 miles to the North) and, due to the earth’s equatorial bulge, it’s summit is the furthest point from the earth’s center. Ecuador’s highest mountain, the Peak was first climbed in 1880 by Englishman Edward Whymper, who in 1865 become famous as the first man to scale the Matterhorn. The slopes of this massive glacier-clad volcano’s lower slopes are covered with farms and sheep and llama pastures. This view is from 10,800’ on the mountains southeast side. |
