Star circles & bristlecone pine, White Mountains, California
| Description: | At an elevation of over 11,000 feet in California’s White Mountains, this bristlecone pine snag sits alone and forlorn on the dolomite slope. By the light of a waxing ¾ moon, I made a four-hour time exposure (10 pm to 2 am) facing north towards the North Star, Polaris. The rotation of the earth creates these ‘star circles’ and shows that Polaris is not exactly centered on the celestial North Pole, but does make a small circle around it. This photograph is unique in that there was no sunlight, flash or artificial light used to make it. |
