Lightning bolt, Campito Mountain, White Mtns, California

Description:I climbed the 11,200 foot western slope of Campito Mountain in the White Mountains of California to photograph the bristlecone pines in the sunset light and turned towards the valley to watch the colors deepen in the western sky after the sun set. A passing lightening storm began sending brilliant bolts of light down to the lower hills, giving me an eye-level view. Taking advantage of the low light of the gloaming, I took a series of time exposures (this one was about 30 seconds) hoping to catch a lightening bolt. Of about 20 shots, I caught about 10 bolts and I liked this one the best. Note the rain falling near the lightening bolt – it evaporates before it reaches the ground and is called virga by meteorologists.
