Racetrack rock, Death Valley National Park, California

Description:The enigmatic Racetrack dry lake bed of Death Valley has scores of 'racing rocks' that leave long tracks across the dry lakebed. The best explanation is that, during freezing rainstorms, strong winds push the rocks over the slick mud which later dries and cracks. Because of the remote location and infrequency of the right conditions, no person has ever witnessed this actually occurring.
