Machu Picchu at sunrise
Peru
| Description: | Machu Picchu lies at an elevation of 8,040 feet, straddling a steep 1,500’ ridge. Built prior to the 14th century, the site was never found by the Spanish Conquistadors. It was ‘re-discovered’ by American Hiram Bingham in 1911. Looking north from below the ‘Hut of the Caretaker of the Funerary Rock’, this is the classic view of Machu Picchu. The impressive peak looming over the site is Huayana Picchu or "Young Mountain" which can be climbed by a steep ancient Incan trail, a climb of over 500 vertical feet. |
