Summit Ridge, Imja Tse
Mt. Everest Region
Nepal

Description:Ringed by huge glaciers streaming down the south face of Lhotse, this popular peak is often called “Island Peak.” Imja Tse lies just 4 miles south of Mt. Everest. This photo was taken looking southwest from the summit, listed at 6,189 meters (20,306’), about the same height at Alaska’s Mt McKinley. The prominent peak in the background is the impressive Ama Dablam (“the mother’s jewel box”) which itself is 6,856 meters (22,494’), some 6 miles away. Members of the historic 1954 British Mt. Everest expedition first climbed Imja Tse in 1953 to test new bottled oxygen systems. I climbed it with four British climbers on a beautiful November Day. The dramatic summit ridge drops over 3,000 feet on either side.
