Snow Cave at Piute Pass
Sierra Nevada Mountains
California
| Description: | An unusually dry fall left no new snow in the high Sierra into mid-December of 1995. I hiked past frozen lakes all the way to 11,423-foot Piute Pass and, just east of the crest, came upon this melting snow cave – made of snow from the previous winter. Passing inside the six-foot high opening, I found it made a wonderful natural frame for the mountains to the southeast. |
