Mariposa Redwoods in Snow, Yosemite National Park, California

Description:The Mariposa ("butterfly" in Spanish) Grove of Giant Sequoias is a magnificent collection of majestic redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) some aged over 2,000 years. These trees average 10 to 15 feet in diameter and about 250 feet in height. I snowshoed several miles around this grove in a heavy snowfall. The weight of the snow bowed the branches down and I had to dodge mini-blizzards of snow shedding off overloaded branches.
