King of the Road: Leopard in road, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Description:The winter morning was cold and damp, the grass covered with dew and valleys filled with fog. Like all cats, I knew that the best place to look for big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) would be someplace dry and in the sun. I looked in rocky places in the sunlight and on large sunny tree limbs but, to my surprise, this leopard was enjoying the sunlight in the middle of the park’s main road! He chose a good spot on the crest of a low hill where he could see far in both directions. He spotted me a half-mile away and I slowly approached him, stopping every hundred yards or so to take a photo (and hoping that another car wouldn’t come the other way) and he let me get within 200 yards before getting up and walking off and disappearing into the dense grass.
