Showdown at High Noon, Andoni Waterhole, Etosha National Park, Namibia
| Description: | The lionesses ran full-tilt at the old gemsbok but he stood his ground! Because of his bad leg, he couldn’t run away, but he threatened the lions with his horns and they suddenly stopped, surrounding him and looking very confused about what to do. One lioness or the other would half-heartedly try to get behind the old gemsbok, but he would turn and point his horns at her and she would back away. So here, at high noon at the dusty Andoni Waterhole, there was a stand-off between three lionesses in their prime, and one old gemsbok! The lionesses seemed confused by the fact that the gemsbok had not run away – perhaps failing to trigger their predator instinct to tackle and bring-down their prey. Perhaps they, seeing that the old guy couldn’t run away, decided that, not being particularly hungry, they would wait and finish him off when they felt like eating again. Perhaps it was just too hot in the mid-day sun to exert themselves on a kill. (See next photo for the rest of the story) |
