Closing in for the Kill, Etosha National Park, Namibia

Description:The only water for miles around and with only sparse grass as far as the eye could see, the Andoni Waterhole was being ‘staked-out’ by three lionesses. There were over a hundred zebras, and equal number of gemsbok and wildebeest all standing downwind of the water, waiting for the lions to go away so they could drink… of course the lions won’t go away hungry, so they must wait for one of their hoofed bretheren to get eaten, and then the others can drink. The gemsboks are braver than the zebra and got to within 100 meters (yards) of the beckoning water, with the lions lounging in the grass a further 100 meters up wind. No one was moving, but along comes this old gemsbok – limping up to the waterhole without any hesitation! His right-front leg was bad, he could barely support his weight on it, his left horn was split down the middle for several inches and his ribs were showing and, as he hobbled-up to the water and boldly started drinking, the lions sat up and took notice!

The lionesses got up and crept towards the drinking gemsbok – the other gemsbok all looking at him incredulously, knowing the lions were about to pounce. The lionesses ran full-tilt at the old gemsbok and... (see next photo for the rest of the story)
