Far and Away... Friendly Faces and Faraway Places ~ About the Photographer |

Travel is his passion. For the past 30 years, Bruce Muirhead has traveled and photographed the world. He has visited over 100 countries on all 7 continents and amassed a collection of over 50,000 color slides. Bruce averages two months a year of travel around North America and abroad. “Travel,” says Bruce, “especially independent travel free from tour groups and guides, enables us to not only learn about other cultures, places and histories; it also helps us to learn about ourselves.” Bruce’s past work experience is as varied as the places he has visited. During high school and university summer and winter breaks, he taught rock and ice climbing in the Cascades and Rocky Mountains, including working as an instructor for Colorado Outward Bound. His interest in nature led him to a degree in Geology, doing thesis work in Glaciology in Alaska. After graduation, Bruce joined the Peace Corps, serving in a small village in the mountains of South Korea. Upon his return to the US, Bruce began a career as a National Park Ranger, working in parks in Oregon, at the Grand Canyon and in Hawaii. After graduating from the Federal Law Enforcement Academy, Bruce worked as a Federal Police Officer on Oahu, Hawaii and eventually changed careers again - this time becoming a Registered Nurse working in Intensive Care. Almost as much as traveling itself, Bruce loves to share his experiences and photographs through slide shows and printmaking. “The world is a diverse and beautiful place,” says Bruce, “my photos attempt to capture the spirit of these wonderful places.” |
